(This isn't my forte, but I thought I'd give my two cents.)
So of course I've been paying attention to this drama occurring in Georgia. Can't help it, what with me being Russia. I get my news from two sources: the CNN news on TV and the BBC news website. And it's just astounding how differently the two sources view the conflict. The American media is definitely pushing for US involvement in Georgia. They tend to emphasize the Russian actions, putting the blame solely on their side. One of the headlines on TV read "Russia expands Georgia blitz," automatically linking Russia with the Nazi invasions by use of the word "blitz." Overall, Russia is the instigator of the conflict, according to the American point of view, whereas they are acting in a more protective role, defending the smaller region of S. Ossetia which has long been under attack by Georgia.
Okay, I'm not so naive to believe Russia is acting out of a completely selfless motive -- I remember that Georgia has a wealth of oil, but Russia would be acting no differently than the US acted in the MidEast. The point I am trying to make is that the American media prefers to believe in a Big, Bad Russia who hunts down the defenseless piglets. There's a bias against Russia, leftover of course from the Cold War, in which Americans can't believe in a different Russia -- even though there is now a different administration. Granted, the leaders of state ARE former Communist leaders -- but Communism is no longer the official party line. And Bush, of course, is eagerly jumping in without looking to see if he has a place to land.
These assholes, purported "experts", are pissing me off. I'm sick and tired of this American belief that we are right because we have might. Why are we so fucking BLIND to our role in the world??? Our power is waning. And I HATE that Americans believe so steadfastly that we are so peaceful. Everyone is going on and on about a peaceful resolution. (But when the fuck did we become the "peacekeepers" of the world?? "Peacekeeper" is just another word for corrupt soldier -- go watch Farscape.) But we're as bloodthirsty as any nation comes. Let's get the fuck over ourselves and open our eyes to how we really are.
Oh, and Russia isn't going to meekly step aside just because we tell them to. They're not Iraq, which hated their ruler to begin with. Russia may be a mess internally, but they've been playing dirty to get their current wealth. They've got military power -- and they really don't give a fuck about the US. If Bush thinks they're going to kowtow to us, he's a fool. Well, we already knew that.
Oh, speaking of biased media, is it just me or does the media favor McCain more than Obama?
Damn biased media...
